Podcast Episode 003: Candid Conversations about Down syndrome with Grandpa Phil and Grandma Deena
We hear a lot about a parent's reaction to a Down syndrome diagnosis... but we don't normally get to hear from other family members. That's why we're making "Candid Conversations" episodes of The Upside Down Family Podcast; to tell the story of the extended Upside Down Family!
Today we interview Phil and Deena - or as we call them "Grandma and Grandpa!"
When we received Genevieve's Down syndrome diagnosis at birth, we had our own emotions to process. Joy that she was here, but also grief, fear, confusion, hurt, hope... it pretty much runs the gamut. Early on I realized that the rest of our family was also expecting to meet a healthy and typically developing baby. That meant that they would also have to process emotions. I gave them grace to grieve.
Dad and Deena take a step back in time with us and discuss their reactions to her diagnosis, and also to her heart surgery. We found it so encouraging to hear their perspective, and how much hope and love they had from the very beginning.
Enjoy listening to our Candid Conversation with Phil and Deena!
